The unwanted power of social media

It is now more common for advertising to be done by the consumers than buy the producers. We have begun to take into consideration other people’s feelings towards new products, technologies, restaurants, etc. to a whole other level. Because we are in constant connection with each other, it is much easier to let the general public know just really how good a product or service is. Companies have begun a trend of using celebrities to help endorse their products because as society has set it self up, we like to follow the “in” trends. But unfortunately for Samsung this decision caused some controversy. LeBron James is paid a lot of money to endorse the company by using the Samsung Galaxy Note. But recently he used one of the most popular social media sites, Twitter, to let out his real feelings about his Samsung phone. The tweet read: “My phone just erased everything I had in it and rebooted. One of the sickest feelings I’ve ever had in my life!!!” Forgetting his power on how other people will now react to the phone, LeBron completely slapped Samsung in the face with a complaint. Of course, it was quickly deleted after he realized his mistake followed by a tweet that read: “Close call. Wheew! Got all my info back. Gamer! Lol”. This series of events should definitely make companies more aware of the way they advertise and should definitely take into consideration the power that consumers hold on their products.
