It never ceases to amaze me how creative people find ways to make money on the internet. In 2005, a college student named Alex Tew came up with a genius idea to raise money for his college tuition.
Tew created a website composed of 1 million pixels and sold each pixel for $1. His idea and his website became very popular and advertisers began buying blocks of pixels to post their company logos.
After about a year, all of the pixels were sold and Tew successfully raised $1,037,000. Not bad for an investment of only ~$70 to create the website.
Since Tew’s website, many others have tried to create similar websites to sell pixels to advertisers. However, Tew noted that the reason his website became so popular is because it was new and exciting and this brought a lot of media and attention to it. Newer websites just don’t have the same novelty.
