Free Speech

Today’s xkcd comic had an important thing to say regarding free speech which can be extended to have additional meaning in the context of online discourse. The general point is that free speech only protects from governmental actions, not any other possible ramifications of what one might say. We have all heard stories of employees bashing their employers on facebook and being surprised when they are fired, or the more recent story of the 14 year old dutch girl who tweeted a terrorism threat at US Airways and was then surprised when they took it so seriously. When the internet is enabling so many people to say so much so easily, we must develop a new system of etiquette for what it is ok to say and not ok to say, and this needs to be a matter upon which we educate young people finding their voice electronically.
